The sixth Wales China School Forum
2016-03-07 10:38:30

The sixth Wales China School Forum was held at Swansea Metropolitan University on 2-3 June 2013 and was delivered by representatives from Confucius Institutes at Wales Trinity Saint David University and Cardiff University. The main aim of the forum was to summarize the past 5 years teaching in schools across the Wales and provide an opportunity to discuss the plans for the next five years of the Wales China School project.

Over 40 participants were involved in the two day event which started with a training day for all Chinese tutors and teachers from across Wales. The training session was led by Mrs Eluned Davies-Scott and Eirian Thomas from the Confucius Classroom at Cathays High and also by Kristina Hedges from CILT Cymru. The training sessions examined how to plan and deliver effective lessons, and provided an opportunity to share resources, teaching strategies and lesson plans.

The second day focused on ways in which the Wales China Schools network could work together to ensure sustainability and continuity of Mandarin language learning across the curriculum and schools in Wales. Presentations were delivered by representatives by British Council Wales and CILT Cymru and focused on the ways in which schools could introduce pupils to the Mandarin Language in a business context through the Business Language Champion scheme, and also the ways in which schools could partner with Chinese Schools through the Connecting Classrooms scheme. Information was also given about the new accreditation for the Welsh Baccalaureate and how schools can plan for the changes. A series of workshops led by teachers from Ysgol Penlgais, Christ College Brecon, Cathays High, and colleagues from two Confucius Institutes helped to identify the main areas of development.

It was recognized that the Confucius classrooms would play a key role in the delivery of language learning across the curriculum and schools in Wales. Other areas of development included the need for more tutors within schools, the need for an online forum where resources and best practice could be shared and the need to establish and build upon existing links between primary and secondary schools in Wales.
